Kieren and Paula live around the corner with
their three little girls, Sammie, Gaby, and Freesia. Kieren is
also President and guide at Big
Red Cats, which is a part of the Red Shutter Inn, and Paula
is a real
estate agent with Century21.
Before moving to Rossland, Kieren was a corporate
treasurer and Australian Ski Team racer, and Paula was an army
officer, sailed the South Pacific, and was a strategy consultant…we
hope that you come to Red and Rossland and discover why we loved
this place so much we had to move here!
The resident managers, Ian and Natasha Lockey,
are back for their third season at the Shutter, and they know
all the ins and outs of the Inn, and all the secret powder stashes
as well. If you're nice, they'll even show you some. They are
also CSIA Level 1 snowboard instructors, so talk to them if you'd
like to arrange some snowboard instruction while you're here,
or get in touch with them directly to organize it in advance,
atl betty@bettygohard.com.
Originally from New Zealand, they both love the
outdoors and they are determined to ensure their guests discover
the magic of Rossland and Red Mountain. Natasha has a website
for Women's Extreme Sports and is dedicated to women getting out
and having fun - www.bettygohard.com.
Ian and Natasha were married last season at the
top of Granite Mountain. Natasha came in second for the women's
snowboarding Cliff Dive race, and Ian is the Canadian champion
and North American Adaptive Snowboard Champion in FIVE disciplines
- we look forward to cheering him on at the Paralympics, even
if he does race for the Kiwis. (not only was he the adaptive champion,
but his time placed him 5th among the able-bodied racers - so
if he agrees to show you the mountain, watch out!)
While the Red Shutter does not include dinners,
you may arrange for Ian to cater some or all of your dinners,
please contact him direct at betty@bettygohard.com.

There are 6 cozy rooms in the main lodge, each
with two beds. While they are ideally suited to 2 people, children
are welcome and are just $20 if in the same room as their parents.
The two deluxe rooms have one queen and one double bed in each,
and have ensuite bathrooms with shower. The four upstairs lodge
rooms are two separate sets of connecting rooms, each have two
double beds, ensuite bathroom with shower shared with adjoining
room. In winter, a hearty cooked breakfast is included in the
lodge.
The Red Shutter also has a self-catering a-frame
cabin with two bedrooms (each with 2 single beds, which can be
pushed together) plus a sofa. With its own kitchen and woodstove,
you are completely self-sufficient, and right next to the hottub
and sauna. It is a nice step up from camping, but far from a luxury
experience. It is the cheapest slopeside lodging at Red Mountain,
and can be a great experience, if your expectations are set accordingly.
If you think your group is too large for the Red Shutter, give us a call – we
can organize for an appropriate neighbouring condo or hotel to lodge
some of your group.

Next to the lifts at
Red Mountain we are front and centre - you can’t miss us
when you arrive. Red Mountain is located 3 minutes north of Rossland,
BC, on highway 3B. Halfway between Vancouver and Calgary, 10 minutes
north of the U.S. border on hwy 22. From Spokane, Washington,
it is about 120 miles (2 1⁄2 hours) drive or shuttle (we
can arrange). There are direct flights to Spokane from L.A. (Alaska/Southwest/United/ExpressJet),
San Francisco (Southwest/United), Chicago (United),San Diego (Express
Jet) Minneapolis (Northwest), Portland (Southwest), and of course
Seattle (United).
From Spokane, take Division St north, becoming
395. About 1.5 miles after the left turn in Colville, turn right
at Williams Lake Road. Drive ALL the way to the end and turn right
onto highway 25, go through Northport to the Frontier/Paterson
border crossing. Usually not much of a wait, make sure to have
photo ID and proof of citizenship, birth certificate as a minimum,
but if you have a passport, bring it. After the border, drive
about 10 minutes, take the left fork as you pass the gas station,
and go 3 more minutes. Turn left where the overhead flashing yellow
light points to Red Mountain Resort. Wind around on that road
for about a block and the Red Shutter is right before the roundabout.
Parking is limited, if there are no spots in front of the inn,
go down into the resort lot next door - you're their customer
as well, so this is ok, but please leave a note with contact info
in your window if parking overnight, so search and rescue doesn't
think that you're lost on the mountain.
