Cat-skiing

You'll find more catski operators in the Kootenays than anywhere else - including our very own Big Red Cats just 10 minutes up the road! The Red Shutter Inn owns BRC and is the official lodge of Big Red Cats - ask us about special packages for intermediate, advanced, and expert tours, and powder coaching clinics!

Airboarding

We have several airboards for rent and sale - cruise headfirst over the powder, with steering control and cushioning over the bumps! Airboarding is the most comfortable, fastest, and most controllable sledding experience you've ever tried.

Backcountry Ski Touring

Backcountry skiing, Alpine touring, Randonner, whatever you call it, this is the place for it! Rent the gear from us, or bring your own. Thousands of acres of fantastic terrain and untouched powder, and just ski down to the highway and get picked up when you're done. Backcountry skiing is a dangerous sport, and you are completely responsible for your own safety. Guided backcountry tours also available from Big Red Cats.

Snowshoe

Not much into skiing but you like the outdoors? Pack a lunch, hike out to one of the wilderness cabins and enjoy the silence. Way too much snow for hiking. Yes, we can rent you the snowshoes.

Cross-country ski

Ski from the door to the Centennial Trail into town or go across the highway to the vast groomed trails at the Black Jack Nordic Ski Area. Ski rental available around the corner at Red Mountain Village..

Improve your ski technique

Sign up for lessons at Red Resort, or for a more intensive technique-improving course or instructor qualification, we highly recommend our friends Dawn and Mark Impey at Canadian Ski Quest. For coaching in how to ski powder, sign up for a "Lynx" powder coaching tour with Big Red Cats.

Skating

Rent some skates and try out the outdoor or indoor rinks in Rossland, or Nancy Greene Lake. Maybe play a bit of casual hockey

Watch semi-pro junior A hockey in Trail

Trail is pretty proud of their "Smokeeaters" - several times World Champions before the NHL was born.

Swimming, Soaking, and Working Out

lf we get a freak cold snap, take a day trip up to the Ainsworth Hot Springs, or go to the indoor Trail Aquatic Centre with waterslide, hottub, and gym

Massage

There are several therapists who can offer massage in their clinic

Cafes (6):

Alpine Grind Cafe Paula's favourite. The best latte in town, excellent baking, soup, and panini, local artwork.

Adrenaline Rush Cafe In the front of the Prestige Inn downtown, these guys also make really nice coffee, and have some munchies to go with it as well. They also happen to own a transport company, so if you're thinking of bringing a group from Spokane or Calgary, we'll put you in touch.

Cafe Books Coffee and books, as you might guess. Good books.

Clansey's Great muffins and cookies, bustling with locals.

Sunshine Cafe Serves morning breakfast and has a gluten free menu.

A Frame Cabin Paula has an espresso machine next door in the A Frame cabin. It isn't a cafe, but for a small donation to the coffee fund she or Dani would be happy to make you a cuppa and have a chat after the crowd clears at 0830.

Drinks & Merriment (4):

Rafter's Lounge apres-ski beer and pizza upstairs in the skier services building. Don't just go to the cafeteria, go up another floor to Rafter's - and you can bring your pitcher of beer back down to the deck. There should be bands playing at Rafter's on most weekends.

Rock Cut Pub Beer, food, pool tables, bands, less than a half-mile walk

Steamshovel Pub Drink lots of beer and take turns hammering a nail into a big log while everyone cheers... How can that be bad? Legendary burgers and other great value great tasting meals as well.
